Clancy Trials the Battery Kubota U27-4E with GAP Group

Background
As demand for lower-emission solutions on construction sites continues to grow, GAP Group supplied Clancy with the battery Kubota U27-4E for onsite evaluation. The 20kWh/48V mini excavator was put to work on a Scottish Water project in Glasgow, where Clancy are replacing 122m of pdf pipe. The trial offered a direct real-world comparison between battery and conventional diesel plant under working conditions.

On-Site Performance
Operating the Kubota U27-4E was a noticeably different experience from the outset. The most immediate difference was noise. Running without diesel engine noise or idle tone, communication onsite improved considerably, and overall noise exposure for both the operator and the surrounding workforce was significantly reduced.
Beyond the quiet, the machine impressed with its hydraulic response. Instant power delivery gave the excavator a composed, controlled feel that proved particularly beneficial during fine grading and lifting operations, where precision matters most. Operators found they could work with confidence from early on, with visibility and machine control comparable to a conventional excavator, meaning the transition required very little adjustment time.
Reduced vibration was another notable benefit. Over extended periods of use, the absence of engine vibration made operating the machine considerably more comfortable, helping to reduce operator fatigue without any compromise to productivity.

Battery Performance and Operational Planning
Battery performance held up well across normal operational tasks, demonstrating that the technology is genuinely capable in a working environment. That said, the trial also highlighted a key practical consideration: effective use of electric excavators requires planning work activities around charging availability and runtime management.
During heavier or continuous excavation tasks, awareness of battery duration adds a layer of logistical consideration that diesel machines do not demand. This is not a barrier to adoption, but it is a factor that site managers should account for when integrating electric plant into projects.

The Outcome
The Kubota U27-4E performed well across the trial, delivering a cleaner, quieter, and lower-emission alternative to diesel plant without significantly compromising performance or productivity. For sites where noise restrictions, emission limits, or sustainability targets are a priority, the electric excavator presents a compelling and practical option.
