Why Ground Conditions Change Requirements
Every autumn, the same pattern plays out on sites across the country. Weeks of rain soften the ground, load-bearing capacity drops, and machines that coped fine on hard, dry ground through a summer start to struggle with traction, stability and rutting. None of this happens on a fixed date, and it rarely announces itself before the first machine gets stuck.
That’s the point worth planning around: the right machine isn’t a decision you make once at the start of a project. It’s a moving target that shifts with the season, and autumn is when it moves fastest.
Tracked vs Wheeled: Getting the Choice Right for Soft Ground
Tracked machines spread their load over a much larger surface area than wheeled equivalents, which means lower ground pressure, better traction and far less risk of sinking or rutting on soft, wet or uneven ground. For groundworks, muddy access routes or anywhere the site has softened since summer, tracked is usually the safer, more productive choice.
Wheeled machines still have their place. On hard standing, they’re faster over distance, quicker to move between sites, and cause less ground disturbance on surfaces you need to protect, such as finished access roads or protected land. The question isn’t “tracked or wheeled” as a rule, it’s matching the machine to the ground actually in front of you, not the ground you expected when you booked it.
Match Load and Reach to the Task, Not Just the Ground
Ground conditions are only half the spec. The same principle that applies to tracked versus wheeled applies just as directly to size, load and reach: an oversized machine wastes fuel, money and space on site, while an undersized one creates delays, extra lifts, or safety risks it was never built to handle.
Autumn adds pressure to get this right the first time. Softer ground makes it harder to bring in a replacement machine mid-project, and a bad spec decision in October costs more in downtime than the same mistakes would in July.
Shorter Days, Less Visibility
It isn’t only the ground that changes through autumn. As daylight hours shrink, more of the working day happens in low light, and visibility around plant becomes a bigger factor in site safety. Before you head into winter, it’s worth checking that lighting, reversing aids and reflective markings on your machines are up to the job, not just carried over from summer.
